THE STANDARD TREATMENT GUIDELINES (STG)

The STG 2004 is an improved version of Ghana 's STG 2000. Like the latter, it is evidence-based with evidence rating attached to each recommendation. The new STG has 530 drug entities.

The STG serves as one of the means by which quality of care can be provided for patients seeking health care. Through the use of well-established methods of prevention, diagnosis and treatment of common diseases seen in our health facilities, this edition brings together essential and current knowledge necessary for prescribers to provide the best of care to patients.

Ghana has a great opportunity and impetus to roll out the STG on a wide scale and the health insurance scheme provides opportunity and the tools to monitor adherence to the STG

SOME OF THE NEW FEATURES OF THE NEW STG INCLUDE

  • Information on management of Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD)
  • Introduction of clarithromycin in the management of peptic ulcer disease
  • Adoption of amodiaquine-artesunate as the drug combination of choice for the treatment of uncomplicated malaria in Ghana . Amodiaquine-artesunate replaces chloroquine
  • Sulphadoxine-pyrimethamine (SP) also replaces chloroquine in prophylactic treatment of malaria in pregnant women, but the STG cautions that pregnant women who have glucose-6-phosphatase dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency or are allergic sulpha-containing medicines should avoid SP.
  • Ciprofloxacin or ceftriaxone replaces Chloramphenicol in the pharmacological treatment of Typhoid fever.
  • Information on management of retropharyngeal abscess.

Copies of the STG are available at the Ministry of Health through the Ghana National Drugs Programme (GNDP).
